Disc golf is ideally played on a course, surrounded by nature and the thrill of long, sweeping drives. But what do you do when you can’t get to your local course due to weather, unavailability, or other reasons?

Or maybe you’re just looking to switch things up a bit and bring the game home. Let’s dive into some creative and practical ways to keep your disc golf skills sharp without leaving your property.

Setting Up Your Home Course

Choosing the Right Space

When talking about playing disc golf at home, you have a few options here:

Indoor Play

Playing indoors means playing inside your house. We do not recommend this for various reasons, and we will tell you why in a minute. However, you can play disc golf indoors if you have enough space and minimal furniture.

Backyard

Playing in your backyard is the most recommended option. A backyard is an open space that gives your disc a proper chance to fly with minimal risk of hitting people or stuff.

Empty Parking Area

If you have a car parking area that is currently empty, you can use it to play disc golf.

Nearest Park

If all else fails, you can always go to the nearest park around your neighborhood. It does not have to resemble a disc golf course; any open space will do.

DIY Targets and Baskets

Playing disc golf at home is easy and doable with some prep work. After all, you only need a disc and a target for a disc golf game.

You’ve got discs for sure, but what about the target? Well, what kind of person are you? Are you the creative type or the proper type?

I’m a Creative Person

You can use household items or build your own basket. The pros are that it’s quick, cheap, and accessible. The cons are that a makeshift targets are precisely that.

These things can be turned into targets: trash cans, buckets, pillows, mattresses, trees, or any kind of pole. Get creative and look at the objects around you that can be used as a target. Be careful not to use fragile objects that can easily break or shatter when your disc hits them.

If you really have time on your hands and don’t mind the effort, you can consider adding making a disc golf basket to your calendar for the week. DIY disc golf baskets with step-by-step instructions are available online. They are cheap, easy to make, and perform pretty close to the real deal.

I Like to Do Things Proper

There are affordable at-home practice baskets available. The pros are that they give you a more authentic feel with having a basket and chains, what’s more they are probably portable, too. The cons are that you will need to invest some money.

Choosing Discs

Due to limited space at home, we recommend using putters when you play. Putters are slower than drivers and are designed for short-distance throws, making them perfect for throwing at home.

Another reason to use a putter is that putting is the number one technique that you can definitely practice at home.

Disc Golf Game at Home

Now, what games can one play at home? Here are your options.

Putting Practice

Time to do some homework. Disc golfing at home is a great opportunity to hone your fundamental putting techniques. Start with short putts and gradually increase the distance.

You can also challenge yourself with more complex practices. Try putting from different angles or incorporating some obstacles between you and the target.

Set a goal for yourself. For example, you can use a bucket and decide to throw ten times. Your goal is getting eight out of ten landing on the target and if you do not get it right upon first try, you can restart the game until you get it right or set a different goal.

Trick Shots and Fun Challenges

If you are playing in your backyard or a park, you can make things more challenging by adding even more random objects as obstacles and defining a mandatory flight path to reach your target.

Another idea is to make each of your throws more varied by utilizing a dice before each throw (similar to Ript Revenge game). For each number specify what kind of “challenge” throw is allowed.

For example, if number 1 came up, the player must throw with their non-dominant hand while the other hand must stay in contact with the floor / wall / pole during the throw. And, if the dice roles a 2, then, the player must throw with their eyes closed. For number three, one must throw while doing a squat, and so on so forth.

Friendly Competitions

Engage family and friends in fun disc golf games. Set up mini-tournaments or challenge them to trick shot contests. Or you can also do group DIY projects. Engage your creative neurons with a disc golf-themed crafts. Make custom discs, decorate baskets, or create your own targets. After which, you can all play with your creations together.
