Playing disc golf at night can be a fun and challenging experience. If you play it, we guarantee it can become your core memory.
But, it may take a few more preparations for you to ace it well. Today, we will look at a few things you need to know about playing disc golf at night and how you can do it well.
Preparation and Equipment
Before you go out and play, there are a few things you need to prepare. Before that, we would like to ask you a question. What do you think is the most important thing when playing disc golf at night?
If you answered lighting, you would be right.
Playing disc golf at night means you will need light to counter the dark and see your disc and target. Here are a few equipment you will need for that:
- Flashlight / LED light
- Glow disc
- Light for basket
- Glow sticks
Let’s break these down one by one in more detail.
Flashlight / LED light
Flashlights and LED lights are great for carving out your path as you walk or attempt to retrieve your disc. They give enough light to see where your disc is heading and its surroundings.
We do not recommend carrying a hand-carry flashlight during the game itself, as it may be too weak of a lighting option. Instead, opt for a portable LED light with a stand so you can place it on the ground for better lighting.
Glow Disc
Regular disc will not cut it when you are playing at night. You need to use a glow disc to see in the dark. Most glow discs on the market are rechargeable, so you may need to carry a UV flashlight or black light for it.
There are a few options you can choose from. Most disc golf manufacturers will produce a glow-in-the-dark version of their best-selling disc. You can look at their websites and see if they have it for your favorite disc.
If you do not want to spend money on these glowing discs, there is an alternative. You can use a disc night light. You can just attach these lights to any existing disc you have. They will light up during your play so you can easily see and retrieve them later.
Light for Basket
The next thing you need is a light for the basket. You can use a small LED light that can be attached on the edge of the basket. The trick here is to face the light downward so it can illuminate the basket and the pole at the same time.
Glow Sticks
The next thing to get is a glow stick. It is so useful for many things. You can use this to mark your tee pad, flight path it works as extra lights for other things as well.
Where to Play?
Now that you have your lighting ready, you need to figure out where to play. Most parks are closed at night, so you may want to find a place that is both open and safe.
If you know someone with a home course, you can ask if you can borrow it. Make sure to call a day or two in advance.
Anyway, here are a few tips when deciding on a place to play at night.
- Make sure you are familiar with the course. Choose a place you have played a few times before.
- Select a place that is nearby to your house to keep things simple and secure.
- Avoid playing near the road. You never know if a vehicle will pass by without your notice.
- Choose a place with a lot of light or a well-lit surrounding area.
- Avoid forest or mountain areas. The risk of accidents is too high.
Tips to Play Disc Golf at Night
Okay, now that we have already discussed the preparation and the place, here are some tips for playing disc golf at night that will improve your experience.
1. Play with Others
First, make sure you are playing with other people. There are two reasons for this. The first is for safety. It is much safer for you to play in a group or at least one other person.
The second reason is utility. The other person can act as a spotter so it will be so much easier to retrieve your disc later.
2. Keep Track of Your Disc
Speaking of retrieving a disc, make sure you keep track of your disc. When throwing, pay attention to the disc’s flight direction so you know where it lands.
When you are done playing, retrieve all the discs you had. Count how many you brought and bring them all back home with you.
3. Bring Extra Light
Extra lights never hurt anybody. You can bring extra lights in other forms besides LED light, such as headlamps and smaller flashlights. These may come in handy when navigating a path that you have yet to mark.
They also work as backup in case your other lights run out of batteries. Sure, you can bring extra batteries as well. But extra light is great to have even if you do not end up using them.
4. Bring Safety Equipment
Playing disc golf at night comes with an additional danger. Besides the regular disc golf equipment, you also want to carry other safety equipment just in case.
Here is a list of items you should have in your bag when playing at night:
- Pepper spray
- Bug spray
- Pocket knife
- Personal safety alarm
- Your cell phone
We are not expecting the worst, but we are prepared for it if the worst comes.
5. Be Careful of Your Surrounding
The next thing to pay attention to is your surroundings. Be careful of your surroundings when playing at night. Since it is dark, you are at a higher risk of slipping or tripping over random objects on the ground.
You also need to make sure that no one else is standing on your flight path. Watch out for any wild animals that may be around as well. We do not want to harm other living beings with our discs or vice versa.
Light and Action
